ECO and Sustainability
Our Sustainability Lead is Miss E Galloway.
We have a very active ECO committee of 12 pupils.
For the academic year 2023 - 2024, the ECO committee successfully achieved (again) our School ECO status accreditation.
Please read our comments from the ECO assessors:
"It’s great to read that your Eco-Committee members take responsibility for keeping meeting minutes and writing your Action Plan. This will support them to develop their oracy, teamwork and communication skills and give them a strong sense of ownership of their work. The involvement and interest of your Staff Governor is brilliant. It sends a clear message to your Eco-Committee that their work is vital and valued, and this is very empowering for young people. It was great to read that the Environmental Review helped you to take stock of the fantastic work you had already done to promote sustainable transport, as well as to identify areas that would need more work. What really stood out is how you sought input from a whole range of different school stakeholders, using their insight and expertise to help you answer the Environmental Review questions. This demonstrates an inclusive and collaborative approach and will also help to build a more accurate and comprehensive picture of your eco-activity. Terrific work!
Your Action Plan shows that your Eco-Committee members have carefully considered how they can involve the whole school in their planned Eco-Schools’ activities and rolling up your sleeves and tackling areas where you scored lowest, or where there is the greatest potential for impact or improvement, shows you have an ambitious, confident and dedicated Eco-Committee. Well done!
You have embedded environmental issues into your curriculum with great enthusiasm and these issues are being used to enrich learning in your school, whilst engaging young people in important issues such as biodiversity. Your curriculum activities are wonderfully practical and hands-on, and your bird feeder activity, in particular, is a great example of weaving skills such as literacy into eco-topics.
Keeping the school community up-to-date through assemblies, newsletters, Class Dojo and your Eco-Board shows that your Eco-Committee is working hard to involve and educate all around them. We particularly loved the creative and imaginative approach to fundraising by your Eco-Committee by creating a ‘Zero Waste Party Box’ to rent out to parents. Very inspiring!
We love the concept of your Eco-Rap! Your Eco-Committee clearly had a lot of fun writing it and have put a great deal of thought into ensuring that it reflects your school values and celebrates all the brilliant work you have done so far.
The quote from your parent is wonderful and testament to how your hard work and dedication have inspired young people to practise environmentalism in their homes. This enthusiasm is a real strength of your application, and we hope that all staff members take great pride in this.
Congratulations on earning an Eco-Schools Green Flag!"
Planning a children’s party?
Then please consider renting our ‘Party Box’ and help to reduce single-use plastic waste in Dronfield. The Party Box has already had some ‘outings’ during the Summer, which is great to see. The box contains 36 children’s beakers, plates, bowls, sets of cutlery, plus two juice jugs and five larger bowls for crisps, etc. The cost of rental is only £3, though we also ask for a bond of £20 which is returned to you once the box and its contents are brought back to school clean and intact. Through this scheme we hope to offer our families a greener and more economical way to party! For further details, please contact the school office.
Let's Go Zero
As a school, we have signed up Let's Go Zero. We are looking to create an action plan to make net zero achievable. The Let’s Go Zero Campaign are helping us lower our school’s emissions, identify greener journeys to and from school, and cut energy, waste and water bills amongst other things.
Travel Smart Week
Our last Travel Smart Week was the week commencing 20th May 2024. We encouraged our pupils to walk, bike, scoot or car share to school in order to have a positive impact on both mental health and the environment. Each child's class teacher asked pupils each day how they travelled to school.
