Key Stage 2 SATs

We expect high standards at Dronfield Junior School and the attainment of our pupils is at least in line with national averages and usually above at the end of Y6.  We appreciate that results can also vary from year to year as no two Y6 cohorts are alike.

We are proud of our results, our pupils work hard and strive to be the best they can be.

 Progress Scores

The progress measures aim to capture the progress that pupils make from the end of Key Stage 1 to the end of primary school. They are a type of value added measure, which means that pupils’ results are compared to the actual achievements of other pupils nationally with similar prior attainment.

A school’s progress scores in English reading, English writing and mathematics are calculated as the average of its pupils’ subject progress scores. These scores give an indication of whether, as a group, pupils in the school made above or below average progress in a subject compared with pupils with similar starting points in other schools.

There were no progress scores in 2024 because this cohort of children did not sit their Key Stage 1 SATs so there is no data available from which to identify progress.

The table below shows the school's progress scores from 2018 (with no progress scores in 2020 and 2021 as KS2 SATs did not take place.

2018 2019 2022 2023
Reading -0.2 0.3 -0.5 -1.5
Writing -3.1 -1.4 -3.6 -1.1
Maths -0.8 -0.8 -1.1 -2
A progress score of 0 in any given subject means that pupils in a school made, on average, the same progress as others of similar ability nationally in that subject. Positive scores mean pupils made better progress than pupils nationally; negative scores mean pupils made less progress than pupils nationally in that subject.

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

The multiplication tables check (MTC) assessment focuses on the fluent recall of multiplication facts. This is included in the national curriculum (2014) programme of study for mathematics at key stage 1 and key stage 2. The purpose of the multiplication tables check is to determine whether year 4 pupils can fluently recall their multiplication tables.

There are 25 questions in the multiplication tables check and a pupil who takes the check can achieve a score from 0 to 25.

The mean average score is calculated as the mean score of all pupils who took the check, including those who took the check and achieved a mark of 0. Pupils who did not take the check are excluded. The potential range for the mean average score is therefore from 0 to 25.

Unlike other primary assessments, there is no ‘expected standard’ in the multiplication tables check assessment. Higher scores in the assessment indicate fluency in the recall of multiplication tables up to and including the 12 multiplication table.
